Until recently the PWD Schedule of Rates had two items of workers -man mazdoor and woman mazdoor.. Man mazdoor carried a rate of Rs.140 per day and woman mazdoor Rs.120 per day. Some intervention did take place and at present in the Schedule of Rates they have included only Mazdoor -for both man and woman equal daily wages. But in actual practice in construction sector the descrimination prevails. In actual practice women labourers get paid less than men.
Same thing is happening in teaching and teacher education field. Teaching field offers large employment. And most of the teachers are women. Being unorganised they are easy to be exploited, with low salaries. No party, not even the communist parties will come to help them.
90% of teachers in the B.Ed training colleges are women. They do not protest low wages. They are not supposed to protest, because they are women. Universities are in the forefront of the exploitation. While permanent employees of the Universities get fat salaries with DA revision and frequent salary revisions, they do not like to increase the 'salary' (or wage) of the contract teachers who constitute 90%.
Teacher Educators, who are teachers of teachers, are treated like slaves in this country. How can we expect anything positive happening here..?
